Build me a bot - Is AI about innovation or automation?
Are artificial intelligence and machine learning just tools to automate tasks or do they offer an opportunity for breakthrough performance transformations? With continued growth in investment into AI and ML, plus a steady drum beat of support (or hype) for them, more organisations are looking into what they could offer.
For many, the focus is following a research and development path, using these tools to look for innovations which may or may not get to the point of being deployed. The output may even be new patents, but could equally be frustrated data scientists whose new ideas never see the light of day.
Alternatively, should AI and ML be set to work on automating routine tasks and freeing up resources, from creating chat bots to improving data quality? Will this approach produce more benefits or simply miss the big wins? And will organisations be willing to make the big calls on human resources if and when the machines prove they can do the work better?
